Rym Ayadi is Professor of International Business and Finance at HEC Montreal International Business School and is the IRCCF Founding Director since July 2014. She is Board member of the Alphonse and Dorimène Desjardins International Institute for Cooperatives of HEC Montreal and Director (2014-2017). She is also Senior Fellow at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Slovenia, Founding President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association and Scientific Director of the Euro-Mediterranean Network for Economic Studies.

Areas of expertise

Rym Ayadi’s fields of expertise include financial institutions (with special focus on the stakeholder versus shareholder value models) and markets, financial regulation and supervision, financial development and economic growth, crisis management, competition, SME and consumer policies, risk management, European financial consolidation and efficiency, regulatory impact assessment in financial services, financial services provision and financial inclusion, European financial integration, retail financial services and payment systems and SME financing and development.
Her fields of expertise also cover Europe, US, Middle East, Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Africa, with a focus on socio-economic and financial market developments.

Research interest

Her current research interest focuses on the redesign of globally sustainable and inclusive financial systems so that they better serve long-term economic and societal objectives. She devotes particular attention on stakeholder value models (e.g. financial cooperatives and other similar forms of incorporation) and the future of business models in finance, financial regulation and incentives in the financial market.

Rym Ayadi was nominated in November 2015 by the European Parliament as specialist member of the high-level experts group on banking resolution for the banking union of the European Union. She has also served as a senior figure within several high-level expert groups in the European Commission, ILEG (Insolvency Law Expert Group), FINUSE (Financial Users Expert Group), Euro-Mediterranean Charter of Enterprise high-Level Group, and others. Also as external expert to the European Parliament Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) and Foreign Policy Committee, invited expert in international organizations (e.g. UN, OECD, IMF and WB), and academic expert member of the EIOPA (European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Stakeholder Group – 2010- 2013).

She is a member of several editing boards of scientific journals (e.g. Journal of Financial Economic Policy).

She was Vice President of the European Financial Inclusion Network (EFIN), a European network that promotes mutual learning on financial inclusion, and President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association which she founded in October 2012, and which strives to contribute to the rethinking of Euro-Mediterranean policies and the development of inclusive and sustainable socio-economic models in the region, in view of the new dynamics of a multi-polar world.

Experience

Previously, Rym Ayadi was a Senior Fellow and Head of Research at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels (2001-2014) and Scientific Director of the Mediterranean Prospects Research Network (MEDPRO) funded by the European Union Seventh Framework Research Program (FP7) (2010-2014).

Prior to that, she was senior lecturer of international financial institutions and markets, and financial and risk analysis to Post-graduate level at the International Business School in the Isle of Man. She also worked as an economist at the French Banking Association and at the European Commission in Directorate General Economics and Financial Affairs. As well, she lectured in industrial economics and game theory at the University of Lille II and at the University Paris Dauphine.

Rym Ayadi holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Finance from University Paris Dauphine.
